Whitehall
On-line uses current internet technologies
to provide the best on-line learning experience available. This can
cause problems for some of you, but this section provides you with the
support needed in upgrading your internet settings.
If advanced technologies
have been incorporated in the Whitehall On-line site they have
been done so on the basis that they will incurr no expense beyond minimal
initial internet connection time for you.
Images
Images are used throughout the site both in the materials and in the
navigation tools. Make sure that you have the images automatically 'turned
on'.
(see sample preferences dialogue
box for Netscape or preferences
for Internet Explorer)
Javascript
Javascript is a common add-on language that most browsers now understand.
On a learning site such as this Javascript add features that are beyond
basic browser capability but give an enhanced power to the delivery
and interaction of this site.
Animation
Animation provides Whitehall On-line with a way to effectively
provide the gateway interface to aid navigation.
The technology behind this animation is known as Flash. Flash
is a plugin (browser add-on) technology that is rapidly becoming a standard
on the web. Both Netscape and Microsoft now provide this
plugin with their latest browsers. Flash animation files are
typically very small and therefore download very quickly. In addition
Flash provides interaction - this has allowed Whitehall On-line
for instance to use Flash as the gateway interface (the top level
navigation mechanism). Find out more about Flash,
and how to download the plugin.
Animation can be
used to graphically illustrate concepts too. Therefore it is likely
that learning resources developed for Whitehall On-line will
use Flash animation.

Multimedia
including sound, video, animation and interaction is used in places.
These may require other plugins, but help and guidance will be offered
if you need to set up these features.
