Residential Courses 2004

Organising people at work to act collectively and give mutual support is the best way - and in the long term the only way - to protect and improve working conditions. The 2004 Whitehall programme for representatives and members aims to help you develop the knowledge and skills to improve your own organisation.

There are introductory courses for new representatives that cover the important tasks in which you are involved. For the more experienced, courses are available to develop the skills that you need as a representative and to improve your ability to handle and organise around the issues that arise in the workplace. There are also a number of courses for members.

All these courses are held at Whitehall College and last a week. Students arrive mid-morning on Monday and leave after lunch on Friday.

Introductory Courses for New Representatives (10 Credits each)

Courses for the Public Sector (10 Credits each)

Courses for Health and Safety Representatives (10 Credits each)

Skills Development Courses for Representatives (10 Credits each)

Specialist Courses for Representatives (10 Credits each)

Personal Development for Members and Representatives (10 Credits each)

Courses for Learning Representatives 2004

Learning is an increasingly important part of the union role. The rapid development of new technologies and the acceleration of economic and industrial change have transformed the world of work. Nowadays, we all need to keep updating our knowledge and skills in order to keep up with the pace of change at work and in the rest of our lives. The union's ability to promote learning adds extra value to union membership, particularly at a time of intense change. The opportunity to learn improves the quality of life at work and opens up new opportunities for our members.

Learning Representatives have a key role to play in helping the union deliver lifelong learning in the workplace. They assist members on issues related to learning. This could range from identifying courses for someone to study through to negotiating with the employer for time off.

The Learning Representative courses are designed to equip reps with the skills to broaden the bargaining agenda, and provide additional organising tools for reps to use. (These courses are accredited by the Open College Network).

Courses for Workplace Groups 2004

Specially designed training courses that meet the particular needs of reps within the same workplace or company group can be provided. Our standard courses can be tailored to meet your needs, and we can provide courses on particular issues such as:

  • Organising Skills
  • Bargaining Strategies
  • Equal Opportunities
  • Training

Representatives who would like to see a course organised for their company or workplace group should contact their Regional Officer.
