You may find it more useful to print this document out rather than read it on screen (select this frame by clicking on it, then go to the File Menu and select Print).

(Note: You can turn something 'off' through de-selection i.e. clicking on the item so that the tick 'disappears'. To reselect (or choose) click on the item so that a tick re-appears)


Optimising the Toolbar

You can drag the Toolbar bar at the top of the browser as you would to resize other kinds of windows interfaces. As you move your cursor over the Toolbar boundary note the cursor changes to a double-headed arrow. Click and drag the border.

As the Toolbar in compressed in size all tool functions remain available. Shutter type handles appear that can be dragged to reveal tools which have been hidden by your resizing.

Where have you been? - finding your history links

Your history list in similar to a favorites or bookmarks list. It provides you with a list of hot linked addresses of recently visited sites, so that they remain only a click away.

You can alter the defaults for saving history information in View Menu/Options/Navigation

Showing your history links

Click on the drop down arrow at the end of the Address box to display hyperlinks to recently visited pages.

You can view a hot history list of the last few hundred sites you have visited. Choose the Go Menu and Open History Folder

Increasing screen size to view web pages

All Toolbars can be turn off from the View Menu. All functionality remains available in the menus.

In Internet Explorer even the status bar can be turned off in the View Menu.

The size of text can be reduced by clicking the Font button (or View Menu/Fonts) allowing you to fit more web page on your screen.

As with any PC application there are various keyboard shortcuts available. These can speed up your interaction and encourage you to dispense with the Toolbars. See the Help Menu/Help Topics/Tips and Tricks

Converting Netscape Bookmarks to Internet Explorer Favorites

(Internet Explorer 3.0, 3.01, 3.02 for Windows 95)

Choose the File Menu in Internet Explorer, click Open, and then click Browse. Locate the Bookmark.htm file in your Netscape folder, click on the file, and then click Open. Use the right mouse button to click a bookmark in the Internet Explorer window, and then click Add To Favorites on the menu that appears. Repeat for each bookmark you want to convert.

Incorporate five favourite sites into your Toolbar

Go to a favourite page and choose the View Menu. Select Options and the Navigation tab. In the Page List box select a Quick link. Type in a short name for the site and click Use Current. The site will appear in the Links toolbar.

Turn your browser into a file manager

Type C: in the address bar and press Enter to display the contents of your hard disk. Typing in a longer path name will display the contents of that path position. Typing a: will display the contents of your floppy disk.

Locate hyperlinks quickly

Use the Tab key to find all the hyperlinks in a web page in order (holding Shift at the same time will reverse the order). Press Enter to follow the highlighted link. Press the spacebar to activate a selected button.

Moving from frame to frame

Pressing Control and Tab will move you from frame to frame.

Use Internet Explorer as a search engine

Type GO followed by some keywords in the address bar and press Enter to perform an autosearch.

Follow a link but keep your current page

Press Shift as your click on a link. The destination page will open in a new browser window.
