GENES (pronounced 'Jennays'), capricious goddess of beginnings, likes to visit aspiring novelists, give them the perfect first paragraph and then fly off into the ether. Once she was secretly worshipped by advocates of a single male god, to whom she whispered lies about a place called Eden. Lately however she has been greatly invoked by physicists, seeking the secrets of the Universe's beginnings, and bioeverythingists, who have named what they belief to be the stuff of life - 'genes' - after her. I fear, however, that she may have been lying to them as she once lied to Jews, Christians and Moslems.
