Bt Cotton in Indonesia:
Farmers in the village of Kajang in the Bulukumba regency, about 230 kilometers south of Makassar, have burnt down their plantations in a show of discontent towards PT Monsanto, the supplier of imported transgenic cotton seeds . The farmers have also demanded an explanation from the South Sulawesi governor as to why he allowed South Sulawesi to become the testing ground for the controversial technology-which turned out to be a failure.


Philippine Farmers Uproot Bt Corn:
On 29 Aug 2001, around 800 farmers in Tampakan, South Cotabato led by KMP affiliate SOCOFA, BAYAN MUNA, and other progressive groups, uprooted the Bt corn planted by Monsanto in its field trial site in Tampakan South Cotabato.


Ban of Genetically Engineered Food in Sri Lanka Postponed:
On April 10, 2000 the Sri Lankan government banned imports of all GE foods with immediate effect, according to a senior health ministry official in a Reuters report carried worldwide. PAN AP and partners had immediately applauded the decision, and have been working over the last 2 years to support the campaigns of local groups in Sri Lanka to fight for a "GE Free-Sri Lanka!


Strategy Workshop on Taking ‘WTO Out of Agriculture’:
The United Nations Development Programme's Annual Human Development Report 2001:
The UNDP's Human Development Report 2001, "Making New Technologies Work for Human Development", released on July 10, 2001 has generated strong criticism from numerous organisations over its analysis of the potential risks and benefits of GE crops in developing countries. PAN AP, Karnataka State Farmer's Association (KRRS), UBINIG, Food First, Actionaid and more than 290 grassroots groups around the world object strongly to the report's conclusions.


Potential Commercialisation of Bt Cotton in India:
In April 1998 Mahyco/ Monsanto began small-scale field trials of Bt cotton in India. Permission was granted to conduct large-scale field trials in July 2000. In June 2001 PAN AP and others took urgent action at the request of activists both within India and abroad in protesting Mahyco/ Monsanto's aggressive attempt to fast-track governmental approval for Bt cotton commercialisation.

PAN AP Pesticide Task Force Support Letters:
Biotech Smear Campaign:
On March 13, Malaysia's major news agency, BERNAMA, carried an article based on information from the Institute for Public Affairs (IPA) in Australia, claiming that 'radical' U.S. environmentalists were backing so-called "anti-biotechnology" groups in Malaysia. The article named Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Asia and the Pacific as one of those groups. The article was subsequently picked up by the major English papers in Malaysia.


Aerial Spraying of Pesticide Exacts Deadly Toll in Kerala
Padre in Northern Kerala is a village where physical deformities, cancers and disorders of the central nervous system are nothing out of the ordinary. Over a decade, a local doctor discovered a classic cluster within a settlement of 400 households, where more than 156 people, including a disproportionate number of children, were afflicted with severe health problems -- cancers, epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, congenital anomalies and suicidal tendencies. In Padre and nearby villages, entire families have been ruined, marriages destroyed, childhoods robbed by these deadly ailments.

Kamukhaan Campaign Page: Victory! Libel Case Dismissed
Dr. Romeo Quijano, a long time anti-pesticide campaigner and President of Pesticide Action Network Philippines, is being sued libel for 10 Million pesos by the Lapanday Development Corporation (LADECO), a banana plantation company operating in Mindanao, Philippines. Dr. Quijano's daughter, Ilang-Ilang Quijano, co-author of the article, and the editors and publishers of the Philippine Post were included in the libel suit. LADECO alleged that the article "Poisoned Lives" which was published by Philippine Post, a national daily, was "plainly defamatory".
