Harvesting Hope

Harvesting Hope - Empowering Women in Pest Management by Sarojeni V. Rengam, 1998, 16pp) This concise, illustrated booklet shares PAN-AP's experience with a successful integrated pest management (IPM) project. Based on a project with farmers in Sungai Buaya, Malaysia, the booklet reveals how women were empowered through the implementation of the IPM project. The booklet highlights the dangers of industrial-chemical agriculture and demonstrates how it deprives women of their traditional role as farmers by excluding them from and reducing their visibility within the development process. The IPM project, however, offered women the space to reclaim knowledge, community leadership, and visibility. As PAN-AP discovered, the correction of gender bias and the empowerment of women are fundamental to the success of any development project.

Invisible Farmers

Invisible Farmers - A study on the role of women in agriculture and the impact of pesticides on them, by Nasira Habib, 1996. It clearly documents that women who are involved in agriculture, come in contact with pesticides and suffer as a result. What is truly remarkable is the depth of understanding of the way in which women in Pakistan have been patently living without recognition, without acknowledgement that they are contributing to their family well being and the income of the nation.
