Hello and welcome...

...to Reed Breadwinners' Information, an open information service and virtual meeting place for everyone who works for Reed Business Information, whether in Soho or Sutton... It is run by the NUJ and the GPMU jointly as a service to members and non-members alike. (And if you have a much better idea for a name, do tell us.)

Earlier this year the government's Fairness at Work legislation started to bite. This will re-recognise trade unions in any workplace that wins back that right through a ballot. Because these ballots are tricky and one wrong move could cost us our rights, we will have a lot of work ahead before planning the details of such a ballot.

There are plenty of other issues to follow, especially as Reed-Elsevier tries again to reinvent itself via restructuring and job cuts originally couched as voluntary redundancies. And, most important of all, ordinary staff grievances and problems that are not being dealt with elsewhere.

So the place to start is through this site. Bookmark this home page now (it'll be discreet in your bookmark list). Or write down: www.poptel.net/nuj/rbi/.

This home page will be frequently updated with new information, making it easier for anyone who feels under pressure from management to sneak a quick look at all the latest.

A news page will show all the information about the company that you'd never find elsewhere, plus important union advice and dates of key meetings, conferences or rallies.

There will also be a help page where anyone can post some work-related worry that management either can't deal with or has failed to deal with.
