The Competition

Talking about the net on the radio, you soon realise that there's a major problem. You want to give people directions to a place on the Web and, if you have a BBC accent, you end up saying:

Aitch Tee Tee Pee Colon Slash Slash Double-u Double-u Double-u Dot
Picture of the prizes ... before you've even started.

No-one, that I've heard of, has come up with a pronounciation for this mouthful. So, in conjunction with the BBC radio program The Network, this is your chance to propose one.

In fact, we may need two pronounciations, to deal with different kinds of Web address: one for http://www. and another one for plain http://.

Send your phonetic renderings of your entries to me, here. Sorry, no sound files. Please use the subject line "http://competition".

You may enter as many suggestions as you like, and the deadline is 18 October 1996.

The prize is mostly to go down in Web history, but the programme has also offered a bundle of BBC Radio goodies -- see our stunning photo! We can't send the prizes unless you include a postal address.

The judges will be myself, presenters Alun Lewis and Angela Lamont, producer Toby Murcott, and anyone else we rope in. The winner will be announced on the last programme of the series, and here. A selection of entries will be posted, excluding those which actually include the word "anonymous".

The small print: There is no cash alternative. I will try to acknowledge entries, but can't promise. I will not enter into correspondence, unless I feel like it. Proof of posting is of no use at all. Employees of the BBC and its contractors, family members of the judges, and Dr. Neutopia may not enter. This otherwise aspires to be an Equal Opportunity competition, and Artificial Intelligences are positively encouraged to enter.
Further rules may or may not be added as need arises.
