Radio Space
Sunday morning, switch on the radio and just hear hiss.Very sad.  What a refreshing change it was - eclectic or what! Hardcore techno, Shirley Bassey, dance-round-the-office jazz funk, anarchy, ambience, almost everything.  Live acoustic sets from new and up-and-coming - the highlight has to be Doves. Apart from a few technical hitches - for example, when the carpark turned off the transmitter - the Station was a haven of good vibe and calm efficiency. It was top, and we miss it.

But good news!  Back in February! So, if you have ideas for a show, you're a performer, you want to help out, or you would like to provide a venue and host the station, contact Radio Space care of 834 5143.

Big thank you to all our volunteers. They were all very wonderful. You have restored my faith in humanity, all you lovely Space Cadets, Station Managers, Technicians, DJs and Presenters, Poets and Performers!  And special thanx to the Luverly Dolan and the Luverly Judd, without whom 48 hours would have been about 10 minutes.

48 Hours - Street Party
Everyone was missing the Street Festival so much, that, despite the shrunken budget, a last minute decision was made to throw a bit of a street party.
The Saturday was billed as Retail Therapy day and included various competitions. Thanks to all the businesses who contributed to the organisation of the Treasure Hunt with prizes and encouragement:  Mule, Organix, Java, Buddhist Centre, Arc, Harry Halls, Mick theBarber, Dr Hermans, Forbidden Planet, Mambo, Origin, Westworld, Aquatech, Fred Aldous, Riding High, Matt & Phred's and Manchester Craft & Design Centre. And all those lovely record shop people who helped out with the Record Shop Quiz Trail:  Ambicus, Attitudes, Slam Jamz, Spin Inn, Beatin' Rhythm, Eastern Bloc, Fat City, One Way, Pelicanneck, Piccadilly Records, Vinyl Exchange, Vox Pop, Vinyl Revival and Earwaves. Well done to the Wonderful Palace of Affleck for managing to construct their very own Giant  Crossword Puzzle. The Castle hosted a Pub Olympics where lots of beer guts competed at the noble sports of Pool, Darts and Table Football.

As we know, the sun shines on the righteous, so Sunday's Alfresco day was music and beer on the sunny streets and lots of sunny chilled people enjoying the delights of the sunny Northern Quarter.  Thanks to all those who contributed to creating that ambience, particularly Chris Jam who stepped in at the last minute to mc the fashion show [new career move?].
In the evening, the former Meat Market building on Swan St was transformed into a  film cafe for the evening, supported by Ician.  And very romantic it was too.

Smithfield Site Update
Consultation workshops
Two consultation workshops took place on 17 and 18 August led by BDP and Urbed. The workshops were open to the public and about 40 residents and local business people turned up on each night.   Most of the work was done in small groups, which gave a chance for people to discuss the proposals and come up with suggestions.
The first evening invited participants to formulate their 'vision' for the Northern Quarter and then to examine their hopes and fears for the Smithfield development. On the second evening, we looked at the proposals for the development as they stand, in the light of the previous night's discussion.
BDP are now in the process of drawing from the workshops a 'memorandum' to present to Ician. This will outline the most crucial issues raised by workshop participants. Ician will be invited to respond to the memorandum, giving details and timescale for how they intend to build these suggestions into their design process.
Mackie Mayor
We had been hoping that this fabulous and largely unknown building would be made available for events and exhibitions in the short term until a permanent use is found. Unfortunately, the stains on the beautiful stone floor are not a vestige of the masses of Victorian dead animal that used to grace the building, but rather an indication that the roof leaks. Nor does the neolithic heating system work. So a fair weather venue only. Amec are willing to put up £20,000 to do remedial work on the roof, but would need a
guarantee that they could recoup that amount in the first year of operation.
Fish market facade
At the consultation workshops, the latest plans for this area of the development site were illustrated in the form of one of those lovely models that architects do - high class Blue Peter stuff. A six storey Klingon ship seems to have landed behind the facade.   Could produce major income in parking revenues. I'd like to see the local Parking Attendants give a ticket to a Klingon ship!
Craft Centre extension
Latest plans for this are a five storey block comprising two parts: one residential, one for workshop units, with a link to the existing Craft and Design Centre.

Smithfield Market Site to be used for Markets again
Saturday 11 September sees your first opportunity to buy ostrich meat on the streets of N/4. Developers of the Smithfield site, Ician, have joined forces with the City Council and the Farmers' Union to set up a fortnightly modern-style Farmers' Market. The 20 or so stalls will be set up in front of the Old Fish Market facade on High Street and will be selling a wide range of locally produced meat and dairy products, including wild boar [can there really be many wild ones left in the north west by now?], ostrich
meat [probably not wild], lavender, hanging baskets, flowers and fresh herbs. Four Markets are planned before Christmas: 11 September, 9 October, 13 November and 11 December, with some possible additions.
