Want to know what's happening on Smithfield Site?
Well, actually, nothing at the moment  -   AMEC Developments and Crosby Homes are still in the process of finalising the agreement with the City Council, currently projected to be completed by April.  In the meantime,
the developers will be hosting an open-day: Friday 19 March, 12 - 6.30 pm @ Mackie Mayor Building, 39-45 Swan Street. You are invited to drop in to give your views on the development and meet the people  behind the companies.  And it's a chance to see inside a beautiful, if neglected, building.

I never promised you a roof garden ...
In association with Manchester Institute for Popular Culture and North West Arts Board, NQA is organising a Conference on the future of the Northern Quarter:
Wednesday 24 March, 2-6pm @ MANCAT, 65 Lever St
The Conference will focus on the areas: urban design, cultural animation, living in the city, and the creative industries.  Speakers include a range of professionals involved in urban regeneration, including keynote speaker, Colin Mercer, who until recently was Associate Professor in Cultural Policy and History  in Brisbane and is currently working as a consultant with Comedia. Contact the NQA office if you would like to attend - limited
places available.

Radio Space
Good news!!  Sarah Rowland's almost all-night vigil working on an ERDF funding bid has paid off with an agreement from Eastside Regeneration to fund Radio Space  for a two year project.  The scheme includes five
one-month temporary licences at different venues in N/4, training for volunteers, and the eventual aim of establishing a small community enterprise in its own right.  Matching funding still needs to be raised, but this will be easier now core funding is assured. Any businesses
interested in being involved, either by sponsorship, training or as a venue please contact Sarah on 834 5143 as soon as possible!  The Radio Space Steering Group will also now start meeting again.

The Northern Quarter Cup
Local madcap slaphead, Johnny Woodhams, has organised a Six-a-Side (yes, six) football tournament open to all N/4 footballers. Teams already booked include boys and girls from the Craft Centre, dolphins [it's hard to
imagine them playing football] from Fred Aldous, and lots of djs and solicitors.  There is a  limit of 20 teams, so if you're interested, get in touch with us soon!  [Either Lorna @ NQA 834 5143, or Johnny on 839 0100 (day) or 445 8775 (evg).]

The University of the Northern Quarter
The Association gets lots of enquiries from students.  In an effort to improve efficiency [that is, to avoid  saying the same things three times n a week], NQA is launching a new scheme which we hope will be of benefit to the student population.  On a Wednesday afternoon of each month (during term time), there will be an information session for students.  Dates booked so far are: Wednesday 17 March 2pm and Wednesday 5 May, 2pm, at NQA officesPlease ring Lorna to book (834 5143).

Childcare in the Northern Quarter
The Play and Child Care Initiative Project, based at the Family Service Unit and funded by Eastside Regeneration, covers the area of Miles Platting, Ancoats and the Northern Quarter, and aims to: support existing play provision, assist local people to develop new play and childcare provision, and research local childcare needs.  For more information, contact: Alison Jones on 205 7402.

New Management Committee
At the NQA AGM in February the following were elected to the Management Committee:
Ian Croal (Band on the Wall)  Kevin Poulter (local resident) Liam Curtin (Majolica Works)   Sarah Rowland (NQA) Joel Fildes (Joel Fildes Photography) Dominic Sagar (Sagar Stevenson Architects) Janine Hague (Hub Marketing) Paul Shambrook (M/cr Business Consortium) John Henley (Bar Fringe) Kath Smethurst (Castle Pub) Wendy Jones (Majolica Works)  Michael Trainor (Pop Empires) Philip Lloyd (Band on the Wall)   Elaine Walsh (Afflecks Palace) Mokshapriya (Buddhist Centre) Grant Windridge (Hemisphere Design) Ewa Norman (Manchester Craft Centre) Helen Woodcock (MERCi)

At their first meeting, the new Management Committee elected the following officers:
Grant Windridge (Chair), Mokshapriya (Deputy Chair), Philip Lloyd (Treasurer) and Kevin Poulter (Secretary).  It was also agreed to co-optMartin Furber (Bar Centro) and Sue Vanden (5/4 Partnership) onto the Committee.

After three years of devoted and inspired work for the Association, Michael Trainor had decided not to seek re-election.  He intends to spend more time with his plastics collection and cooking up more bonkers urban art schemes. The Association thanks him for a job well done, but we won't miss him, because he's not  going anywhere!

Newcomers: Newton Street Gallery & Studio
Both a working studio and exhibition space for the seven resident artists, the opening exhibition Fete is planned for 27 March - 9 April, 11 am till 5pm, Monday to Saturday and work on display will reflect the diversity within the studio, from traditional methods such as painting and photography to the more contemporary, including installation, intervention and performance.  Newton Street Gallery & Studio, 50 Newton St; tel & fax:
224 0405; email: sara@speedstar.demon.co.uk

"In the city streets, men and cats are equal"
Newcomers to the Northern Quarter, the Annual Programme are hosting their second exhibition at their space at 31 Tib St.  Jim Medway, inspired by the area round Tib Street, has created a specially commissioned drawing, occupying an entire gallery wall.  He says "we fear the city because we fear young men.  They colonise and patrol the public spaces of the city, and on Friday and Saturday nights, they are the drunken laughing kings, the
overnight securicam stars"  His drawings of youths have the faces of pussy cats, but, far from being storybook characters, his cats leer at passers-by, wear Hilfiger, smoke spliffs and drink alcopops.   Exhibition open 12 March to 4 April, Thur to Sun, 12 noon to 5pm. Furtherinformation: 835 2325.
