Thanks to the Northern Quarter Association for this piece which appeared in the Bugle (Feb 12 1999)

Building on Co-operation

The four housing associations developing in the Northern Quarter are working together to build upon the existing vibrant and diverse community.
The aim of this group is to create mixed use developments.  These include both affordable rented and properties for sale.

The Guinness Trust ¦ Northern Counties ¦ Riverside ¦ Tung Sing

The Guinness Trust

The Guinness Trust was founded in 1890 by Sir Edward Cecil Guinness, great grandson of the founder of the Guinness brewery, in order to "ameliorate the condition of the poorer classes of the working population of London".
In 1962 the Trust's objectives were extended to cover England and Wales.

The Trust is committed to quality design and effective delivery of a large and imaginative development programme. In the five years since The Guinness Trust embarked on a new mixed funded development programme, 3,105 new homes have been completed.  A further 1,796 homes are currently on site and 1,010 are programmed to start in the next 18 months.

The Trust has been active in the Northern Quarter for over three years and is working closely with the City Council on a number of mixed use projects on Tib Street and Oldham Street. A number of these schemes are being developed in partnership with Tung Sing Housing Association.

Northern Counties

Over the last few years Northern Counties have been actively involved in the steadily improving face of the Northern Quarter. Recognising the growing demand for City Centre living, a number of developments have taken place, including refurbished flats for rent above shops in Oldham Street and Tib Street. These have been particularly successful and show how quality housing can help create thriving urban commmunities.

A further twelve refurbished flats are currrently on site in Turner Street, with completion due next Spring. A combination of Housing Corporation, Local Authority, English Heritage and European funding have enabled these challenging developments to go ahead, demonstrating once again the benefits which can be gained through working in partnership, whilst at the same time helping to preserve another part of the city's heritage.

Riverside

Riverside Housing Association is making a major contribution to the regeneration of the Northern Quarter. In the last year alone we have completed the conversion of a former warehouse building in Turner Street, started work on the refurbishment of 4-6 Union Street and agreed an innovative project to re-develop 22 Oldham Street.

We aim to match living space and lifestyle aspirations by delivering a balanced mix of shared ownership and rented accommodation at an affordable price. Combining traditional features with the comforts and qualities of modern day living Riverside has created a new living concept in every sense.

Innovative and accessible, traditional and eclectic, we have embraced and reflected the culture and spirit of the Northern Quarter to help bring life back into City Centre Manchester.

Tung Sing

Tung Sing was registered in 1984 by the Housing Corporation to provide housing primarily for the Chinese elders in the city centre. We are a community based housing association with a large proportion of our stock in and around the city centre, our latest scheme was completed in May 1998, in the Northern Quarter. This innovative and artistic scheme is designed to
complement other buildings in the area.

We are committed to being a good landlord and our aim is to deliver a quality service: we pride ourselves on offering a local, accessible and culturally sensitive management service to all our tenants and applicants. Where we are unable to provide certain services to suit individual tenant needs through our own in-house staff, we will endeavour to arrange additional service through our partner agencies.

As well as looking after the welfare of our tenants we also pride ourselves on the maintenance of our homes to the highest standard.
