Vic Charles MBE

When Vic started karate at in 1972 few could have guessed that when he retired from competition in 1991 he would have won a total of seven world titles and seven European titles. He represented Great Britain in international sport for sixteen years. He was described by the national coach as "..the most outstanding competition fighter in the history of British karate" and he is recognised world-wide as one of karate's leading exponents. As well as competing he also coached younger karate athletes passing his experience and knowledge onto the next generation of fighters.

His phenomenal success as a competitor and coach earned him the award of an MBE for Services to Karate in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 1989. This was the first time the sport of karate had been recognised and honoured in this way.

On retiring in 1990 he decided to combine his professional background in Youth & Community work with his love of sport and start coaching young people in Hackney. He has to his credit three students who are members of the world championship squad and his team has come to dominate British and European karate winning two European, three British and three English titles.
