Frelimo wins in southern cities

As expected, Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo party, and its presidential candidate, Filipe Nyusi, have won comfortable victories in Mozambique’s southern provinces, in last Wednesday’s general elections.

The results in the capitals of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane provinces, respectively Matola, Xai-Xai and Inhambane city, as announced by the City Elections Commissions, were as follows:

Matola

Registered Electorate 449,754

Number of voters 235,723

Turnout 52.41%

Presidential election

Valid votes 228,894

Filipe Nyusi (Frelimo) 150,510 (65.76%)

Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 52,752 (23.05%)

Daviz Simango (MDM) 25,632 (11.20%)

Parliamentary election

Valid votes 224,154

Frelimo 133,659 (56.93%)

Renamo 50,565 (22.56%)

MDM 36,416 (16.25%)

Xai-Xai

Registered Electorate 73,360

Number of voters 44,800

Turnout 61.07%

Presidential election

Valid votes 43,481

Filipe Nyusi (Frelimo) 36,153 (83.15%)

Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 3,060 (7.04%)

Daviz Simango (MDM) 4,268 (9.82%)

Parliamentary election

Valid votes 42,500

Frelimo 34,356 (80.84%)

Renamo 2,595 (6.1%)

MDM 5,064 (11.92%)

Inhambane city

Registered Electorate 42,868

Number of voters 25,136

Turnout 58.64%

Presidential election

Valid votes 24,044

Filipe Nyusi (Frelimo) 18,834 (78.31%)

Afonso Dhlakama (Renamo) 3,127 (13.05%)

Daviz Simango (MDM) 2,083 (8.66%)

Parliamentary election

Valid votes 23,515

Frelimo 17,605 (74.87%)

Renamo 2,744 (11.67%)

MDM 2,626 (11.17%)

 

In the parliamentary elections, the percentages do not add up to 100, because of the handful of votes cast for the couple of dozen minor parties whose names were on the ballot paper, but who do not stand the slightest chance of electing anybody to the new parliament.
