Job Description

Full-Time Parliamentary Assistant to Lynne Jones MP (Maternity Cover – 6 Month Temporary Contract).

Purpose of Job

To assist with the running of the Westminster office of Lynne Jones MP, corresponding with constituents and ministers and other work as mutually agreed.

Main Duties

1.              Open and dispatch mail; answer telephone, take messages and deal with queries appropriately.

2.              Deal with correspondence and enquires.

3.              Read and digest correspondence and other documents as appropriate and summarise pertinent points for parliamentary action and correspondence with ministers and press releases.

4.              Undertake research from readily available sources.

5.              Book meeting rooms, organise tours of Parliament for constituents.

6.              Maintain work in priority order.

7.              Help to maintain filing system, including computerised filing and record systems, designating appropriate subject references and extracting documents on request.

8.              Liaise with constituency office staff, as appropriate.

9.              Transcribe dictation from audio files.

10.         Other straightforward office duties, as required.

For candidates with appropriate experience there will be opportunities for other Parliamentary work, such as drafting information for my website, Early Day Motions and Parliamentary Questions with appropriate remuneration reflected in salary received.

Skills

  • able to write clearly and succinctly
  • touch typing, 40 wpm minimum
  • computer skills required: sound knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook; casework database MPCase (training given) and internet skills
  • maintain confidentiality at all times and have a strong sense of social justice
  • have a strong interest in UK politics and current affairs

Hours/Salary

37.5 hours per week on a salary depending on experience, in line with House of Commons Guidance on Pay Rates for Members' Staff (between £19,500 and £27,000 per annum).  Pension paid at 10% of salary and 22 days annual leave rising to 25 days after one year of service.
