Advice service
The London Hazards Centre runs a free advice service for
Londoners, aimed especially at workplace and community groups and
health and safety representatives. Our telephone advice line is open most working
hours. Or you can write, fax or e-mail us.
We aim to cover all aspects of workplace health and safety. In the community, we work on subjects such as asbestos, pesticide use, toxic chemicals, contaminated sites.
We also work with local advice centres, law centres and similar
agencies, where specialist health and safety knowledge is needed.
Information resources
The Centre's library contains practical information from trade
union and campaign groups, as well as official, industrial and
scientific publications and electronic databases. The collection
is backed up by access to
the Internet and our world-wide network of expert contacts. The
library is a Practical Information Centre under the WHO
International Programme on Chemical Safety.
The library is open to workplace and community group users, by arrangement (please phone first).
Research service
We carry out commissioned research and literature searches for
trade unions, local authorities, solicitors, the media, etc where
the work is compatible with the Centre's aims. The Centre's
research resources include access to major international health
and safety databases.
Training
The Centre runs health and safety training affordable by local groups.
You can come on a course at the centre: our current programme is here.
Or we can tailor courses to your needs and run them at your venue. We
also run courses in various parts of London via Voluntary Service Councils,
local authorities and trade unions. Course topics include:
Basic health and safety
Stress
Hazardous substances
Computers
Office hazards
Risk assessment
Manual handling
Housing work
Safety representatives' rights
Violence
And other topics - call us to discuss your needs
Inspections
The Centre provides 'walk-through' health and safety inspections
and reports for non-profit organisations at affordable rates.
Inspections are the first step to the risk assessment which the
law requires.
LHC Forums
We run occasional evening meetings for discussion of current
health and safety issues, often featuring a visiting speaker.
News of these is included in our members/subscribers mailings.
