FTP

very confused - have just tried to do ftp exercises (had already done
netscape last week) but can't get anywhere. presume beta.xerox.com and
rtfm.mit.edu are the hosts and /pub/MOOpapers/VillageVoice.txt and
/pub/usenet/news.answers/what-isusenet/part1 are the directories, but am
constantly being told that no such file or directory exists.
Am I doing something wrong, or is it the addresses?
It is also very difficult to do this without having the site downloaded -
it either costs a packet or is extremely time consuming jumping on and off
line any eta on the downloaded version.
we reply:
It is important when using FTP to put in the host information, for e.g.
beta.bxerox.com, in the profile window, but in the remote directory box,
JUST put in the pub/ and click OK.
Then the trick is to work, by clicking on the relevant subdirectories as
they appear , this way you will find the article.
ftp is one of the most connection-heavy activities however if you do it
outside core phone time and compare with the cost of the floppy discs (3)
for a stripped down and compressed netscape, never mind the cost of
software some things, at some times take 20 mins plus but if on lowphone calls this is a few pence there is no charge for the internet connection time (none).
The Rape in Cyberspace is also available via the WWW as some of you found
out!

I'm a mac user and when I try to 'fetch' Netscape, I get, after 4 or 5
minutes,
"Error: Connection was refused". Do you know what I'm doing wrong?
we reply:
this problem has also been encountered by other mac users, I have a few
suggestions, however I am far more PC literate than I am Mac, but here
goes:
- Are you on BT or cable? - if cable you may have to make changes to your
connection.
- If you have call waiting
option this may affect your connection
- You can try changing your settings in the FreePPP box, ask for your
connection to timeout after 30 mins instead of the default which I think is
5 mins.
- there is another possibility i.e. the netscape ftp site and all mirror
spaces are taken up and after a while netscape gives up queueing calls (the
same way it will try and connect with a www server for a few minutes).

I just spoke to you on the phone about trying to download netscape using
ftp, I am now getting an errror message using anonymous as my user id, it
says error message-3212, is there anything else I can do?
we reply:
Make sure you type in your e-mail as your password correctly.- If you don't
you often get an error message, its worth a try!!

Double clicking on WS_FTP like mad but nothing' s happening!
While typing this I've been getting a dialogue box on the screen saying
WASTARTUP. It repeated itself, but every time I clicked on OK it just
dissappeared.
I can't start FTP while I'm using the training package (downloaded). This
is the seventh attempt to send this e-mail.
When I press SEND it locks out and I have to re-boot.I finally got FTP,
but when the screen appeared the exercise relating to it meant nothing to
me.
We reply:
Perhaps you do not have enough memory to run these applications, we advised
that to do the course you needed 8mg ram at least, preferably 12-16mg. If
you have less than 8 then that could be causing these problems.
