GPMU Learning Fund - First Successes

Central Midlands Branch

The Central Midlands Branch has been awarded a bid worth over £180,000 pounds from the Department for Education and Skills' Union Learning Fund. Building on success of its Learning Zone initiative (now in its fifth year), this is a strategic bid to provide a raft of learning services to print employees and their families in the Central Midlands Branch area.

The bid has several key themes which include:

  • Basic skills and supporting key skills
  • Identifying, training and supporting Learner Reps Learning Zone ICT Centre in partnership with learndirect Information, advice and guidance for adult learners Building partnerships
  • Developing online learning
  • Workforce development
  • Employability and managing change
  • "Rolling out" best practice to other GPMU Branches

Branch Secretary Bernard Rutter said "This is a recognition of our success at delivering learning opportunities to employees and the bid will allow us to consolidate our achievements. More importantly we will be able to extend our activities through forging new partnerships and reaching out to people who may not have been previously involved in learning"

He added " I am pleased that the hard work and commitment of our Training and Education Manager - David Jeffery and our Learning Support Co-ordinator - Sara Townsend have enabled us to build a sound reputation both within the GPMU and beyond in the trade union and adult learning spheres"
