The present-day names for Siam and Siamese are Thailand and Thai, so in the workshop we called them that. We agreed that, although many of the Thai principals in the drama were no doubt educated at Eton and Balliol and spoke the most beautiful Received Pronunciation, their speech should nonetheless for dramatic purposes be given a Thai colouring. |
