THE INTERNATIONAL WORK BRIGADES

  1. What is the International Work Brigade? The International Work Brigade consists of groups from the solidarity organisations of several Northern European countries. Members of the Brigade(Brigadistas) live for three weeks on a purpose-built camp near Havana where they carry out agricultural or construction work alongside Cubans. The brigade provides a unique opportunity to experience the Cuban Revolution at first hand and show, practically, that Cuba is not alone.
Brigadistas also take part in a full programme of activities including educational and political events and visits to factories, hospitals, trade unions, schools etc. Entertainment is provided at the camp and excursions to the beach and places of interest are organised.
  2. Who can go? Brigadistas need to be members of CSC (you can join when you apply). We aim to select a balanced group from all backgrounds, ethnic groups, ages and from different parts of Britain. Brigadistas must be able to work co-operatively under sometimes pressured conditions and should be prepared to undertake some solidarity work for Cuba on their return.
  3. What does it cost? The cost of the trip will be around £750. This covers your air fare, basic travel insurance, food, accommodation costs and some visits. You will need spending money and money to cover the costs of optional excursions. Some Brigadistas raise funds for their trip by approaching their trade union, political party or other organisations. Local CSC groups may also be able to offer you help and advice on fund-raising for your trip.

  4. How do I apply ? CSC organises brigades in the Summer and Winter. A 'preparation weekend' takes place at least two months before you leave. This gives you the opportunity to meet brigadistas both old and new, and to share experiences of brigade life. If you wish to apply for a place on the next brigade then please send an SAE to the address below. An application form with the dates of the next brigade will then be sent to you. This should be completed and returned with a cheque deposit for £50 made payable to CSC.
