On Sunday 18th October, top musicians and celebrities from the UK and Cuba will come together for a unique event at London's prestigious Royal Festival Hall. UK stars turning out for Cuba include Julie Christie, Maggie Steed and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music.

'A NIGHT FOR CUBA' features the grandfathers of salsa, Vieja Trova Santiaguera. With an average age of 80, the five musicians have more than four hundred years experience between them. Together they play acoustic Cuban son, the music that became salsa, with the energy and dynamism of musicians a fraction of their age.

Support comes from Mercury Award nominee Eliza Carthy, whose performances embody the sound of centuries of British folk. Also on stage is the leading young Cuban pianist, Aldo López Gavilán, whose first ever performance in Britain follows his recent appearance in the Channel 4 documentary on pianos to Cuba.

The show has been put together by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign to highlight the effects of the continuing United States blockade of Cuba. It also illustrates the failure of the US attempt to destroy the cultural heritage of their small Caribbean neighbour.

'A Night for Cuba' is at 7.30pm, on Sunday 18th October 1998, at the Royal Festival Hall, South Bank Centre, London SE1. Box office 0171 960 4242. Tickets £10, £15, £17.50

Cuba Solidarity Campaign and Como No are joint promoters of this event
