MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

Whether by E-mail or courier pigeon, Cuba is ready for Sunday's (19 October 1997) up coming municipal elections in which some 7,825,000 over 16-year olds are expected to vote. The electoral apparatus has been thoroughly tested.
Every Cuban citizen with the right to vote has been convened for Sunday to freely elect the candidate of their choice in a direct and secret vote.
Each neighborhood will vote for their choice among the 2 to 8 nominees who were proposed in the neighborhood assemblies. 86,57% of the adult population participated in the process to select candidates and according to official reports, some 31,276 candidates were proposed nationwide. Among them, 1,785 are women and more than 8,766 were renominated for the next period of 2 to 2.5 year mandate.
