More than 1,000 women to attend Havana conference

MORE than a 1,000 women have confirmed their participation at an international women's solidarity meeting set for Havana this spring.

Speaking from the eastern city of Bayamo, Cuban Women's Federation President, Vilma Espin, said that the women will meet in the Cuban capital from April 13- 17.

The fact that so many women from around world have already confirmed their attendance at the Havana meeting, said Espin, demonstrates the great international sympathy and respect Cuba generates abroad.

Vilma Espin also said that Cuban women intend to launch a call at the meeting for international solidarity and assistance in improving the difficult situation of women, children and youth around the globe, because they are the principal victims of the current neo-liberal policies.

The women's gathering in Havana is organised by the International Federation of Democratic Women, and the Cuban Womens' Confederation. and is expected to be larger than the last one, held in 1993.

Called "For solidarity amongst women towards equality, development and peace" workshops will include discussion of women's role in the economy, politics, health, education , culture and the media. They will also focus on the issues of violence and discrimination, national sovereignty and peace.

The CSC has an organising committee for women who wish to go and a pre-conference meeting is being planned to take place in London in March. Contact Francoise on 0181 882 7336 or Beverley 0171 223 7123 for details.

The committee will not be making travel or accommodation arrangements, any readers who intend to go are urged to make their own arrangements immediately by contacting one of the following:
