FOR a long time, the Freedom House Foundation has been known as a player in the Cold War which from its headquarters in Washington prides itself on its 'great contribution' to the destruction of socialism in Europe.
But behind its image as a promoter of 'democratic values' and its status as 'non-profit making organisation,' there hides a more sinister reality. The recent revelations by Cuba's security services show Freedom House to be a surrogate intelligence force undertaking a role in the subversive dirty war which Washington has waged for the past 37 years.
According to Granma, Frank Calzón, the head of the Washington branch of Freedom House, who sent Dorn on his mission, " is an old parasite living high on the hog from the multi-million dollar business operation that has become the war against Cuba."
Calzón was recruited by the CIA during his university studies and later placed by the CIA in the post of translator for the U.S. State Department.
He was formerly a member of the leadership of ultra right-wing Jorge Mas Canosa's Cuban-American National Foundation and also had ties with the terrorist group 'Alpha 66.' He left the Foundation, however, after losing a power struggle with Mas Canosa.
Calzón was instrumental in collecting funds to be sent to the Nicaraguan contras based in Honduras during the 1980s and was a virtual ambassador for Angola's reactionary rebel UNITA organisation when Cuban troops were helping Angola to defeat an invasion of that country by the South African apartheid regime.
The newspaper also said he had participated in plots against sectors of the Cuban-American community that favour normal relations between Havana and Washington.
Currently, it alleged, Calzón is actively carrying out a campaign to pressure foreign diplomats accredited in Cuba who travel to the United States or other countries, attempting to convince them to personally take back to Cuba materials and money for the small groups of so-called " dissidents."
In other words Freedom House, and other similar organisations, amount to nothing more than factories that fabricate dissidents and opposition parties which can then become the focus for 'human rights' campaigns in the United States.
