Successful Cuban visit to Cambridge

THE activities of the Cambridge group have focused this summer on the month-long visit of Carydad Morales, a teacher of English at the Institute of Business Management in Havana.

As the first Cuban ever, Carydad was offered the opportunity to attend two courses in Business English free of charge at the Studio School of English in Cambridge.

Before her arrival in late July, the group organised host families and fund-raised to provide pocket-money for her during her stay. Carydad's visit has been a great success for her personally and in her role as an unofficial ambassador for Cuba on the high-profile English as a Foreign Language (EFL) sector here in Cambridge.

Thanks to contacts among CSC supporters, she was able to collect a great deal of teaching material for her institute. Meetings arranged by a CSC member resulted in the offer of one or possibly two fully funded scholarships annually for other Cubans to attend English summer courses at a leading EFL institute in Cambridge. Carydad was interviewed on local BBC radio. At a party for members and the many people who had given financial and other support, she metrepresentatives of several other activist groups in Cambridge.

During her stay, Carydad helped out on our regular Saturday morning stall which has also been enjoying great success thanks mainly to the enthusiastic response of the many foreign visitors in town at this time of year. Everyone has been very happy to meet Carydad and to see how useful her visit has been.
