BUILDLINE is a building products database developed by Cheshire County Council and made available in association with Kennedy & Donkin Ltd. It contains names and addresses of companies and descriptions of their products and associated trade names.

The information in each record is abstracted from product literature supplied by the companies; Cheshire County Council cannot accept responsibility for the accuracy of this information. In addition, inclusion does not imply any form of approval or recommendation. The catalogues and brochures are NOT obtainable from Cheshire County Council; companies will supply copies direct to enquirers.

Although the companies and products represented have been used by Cheshire County Council, the database is NOT AN APPROVED LIST and should not be used as such.

SEARCHING There are three basic search terms that can be used on Buildline:

COMPANY NAME
TRADE NAME
PRODUCT TYPE

Enter a word or a simple phrase as your search term. For more complex searches, you can use the Textract query language. Each record can be up to three screens long and all fields are searchable.

Trade names are always in upper case and they are usually unique registered names. They often have eccentric spelling which can give rise to searching problems. Generic product description describes the product in general terms. The Construction Industry Thesaurus is used to control vocabulary in some measure. Attributes are qualities possessed by products which may be important to specifiers and cover a wide range. You will find terms such as 'asbestos free, 'spray applied', 'interior use' or 'low odour' as well as indications of colour, size or shape where these are sufficiently distinguishing to be included.

ECOSAFE is another attribute that may be used as a search term. This does not mean that the claim has been verified or that the product type in question has never been harmful to the environment; specifiers must use their own judgement. Following product listings you can find indications of quality assurance by the presence of the keyword QA, followed by the type of QA involved eg. BS5750 or BBA Agreement Certificates. QA may relate to only one product in a range offered by a company and then it will appear in the product listings. Where an environmental statement has been received the keyword ECOSTAT will be seen. If you find that a company has been WITHDRAWN, it usually means that in can no longer be traced or that it has ceased trading. These records are kept to avoid fruitless searching elsewhere, particularly for building maintenance specifiers.

Other company details such as mergers, take-overs and parent companies will appear at the end of the record, as will details of company representatives.

A rolling programme for updating the information is in place and the date field on the record indicates when the company was last contacted.
