My work is primarily concerned with emphasizing textures acquired through manipulating clay using plaster moulds to produce a functional vehicle for the textures to be viewed.
A white earthenware body is used as a blank canvas, providing clarity and sharp contrast. Black stain is used to excentuate the textures, producing a visually pleasing monochrome design.
The clay is press-moulded in plaster moulds to produce the form which takes on the function of a bowl or vase. My influences are from a variety of sources specifically natural forms.
For making the moulds, I use a laithe to turn plaster positives (of the forms I want to make) and then I produce a plaster negative into which the clay can be pressed and formed. In some cases a transparent matt glaze is applied as the clay is fired to 1160oC and needs a glaze to be non-porous.
When the texture is being created I try to let the clay move, helping it to create its own form, which I feel produces a more natural and subtle quality.
I sell my work through shops and galleries and I welcome commissions.
